Tourism project challenge for students

Students During Work Experience Tourism Project

Teenagers from Brockington Academy enjoyed a week of work experience with a difference as part of a Council-run initiative.

The first-ever Place Project saw Blaby District Council host 18 Year 10 students for a group work experience event with a tourism theme. The group format, instead of individual placements, offered the students a wider insight into a variety of career paths.

They learnt about the District’s current visitor attractions and were tasked with creating their own tourist destination aimed at families and young people.

Meeting with various officers they discovered how the Council is involved with such developments at all stages, from planning and licensing to employment, business support and marketing. They also collaborated with external tourism partners to gain first-hand knowledge.

Among the imaginative innovations for a new attraction were adrenaline-fueled experiences at Croft Quarry and Kirby Muxloe Castle and a Blaby People’s Festival for Bouskell Park.

Comments from the students at the end of the week included:

"I enjoyed learning about the many jobs and roles the Council do."

"I liked learning about the importance of branding and logos within a business."

"I found the most interesting thing was about how to start up a business and where to begin."

The Place Project was led by the Council’s Community Work and Skills team with support from the Health and Leisure team.

Councillor Nick Chapman, Portfolio Holder for Community and Economic Development, said: "Our teams did an excellent job in organising the Place Project, giving these young people a fun challenge which gave insights into so many varied careers. We used this group format, rather than having individual placements, for the first time and it has been a resounding success.

"I was privileged to be at the presentations of the students’ proposals for their new visitor attractions and I was incredibly impressed by their enthusiasm and creativity. I’m sure the week has given them all plenty to think about career wise as well as helping them hone communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills."
