Supported housing scheme opens

Cllr Les Phillimore Cutting The Ribbon To Open Frost Court

A specialist supported housing scheme, part funded by Blaby District Council, has officially opened in Blaby village.

Frost Court in Grove Road offers 15 one-bed social rent apartments for adults with mental health needs.

It has been delivered by housing association Norton Housing and Support and Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA).

Along with Homes England, the Council contributed £75,000 to the project in January 2022.

Construction was progressing well until January 2024 when work ceased due to the developer going out of business.

A new developer was found but extra costs required all partners, including the Council, to step in financially once more to meet the deficit of £173,505.

Now the apartments, Norton’s first new build scheme, are almost all let. A housing officer helps residents maintain their tenancy and live as independently as possible. Advice and signposting are available on life issues such as health, education, employment, grants and benefits.

One of the latest tenants, Lauren, said: "I absolutely love it here. I have my own place and I have people around to support me. It’s a safe area, I couldn’t have asked for anything better."

Norton’s chairman Wal Holynski and chief executive Joanna Fleetwood-Smith spoke at the opening while Council Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community, Councillor Les Phillimore, did the honours by cutting the ribbon.

Cllr Phillimore said: "We have been behind this much-needed scheme all the way and are delighted to see it come to fruition, despite the challenges. It’s clear from talking to the tenants that they love it here which is wonderful.

"There is a lack of supported accommodation in the District so to have Frost Court is a huge bonus, helping provide real homes for some of the most vulnerable people in our society."

Fran Cropper, NCHA Housing Development and New Business Manager said: "We were delighted to be given the opportunity to provide a full development service to Norton. We all care passionately about affordable and supported housing, so working in partnership with Norton to provide 15 supported homes, on what was their first new build development was an honour.

"I’d like to thank Blaby District Council and the Norton Board and staff for their support throughout the process. We wish you the very best of luck for the future."
