Local government reorganisation: Meet the Leader

An in-person event to understand more about a draft proposal for the future shape of local government in Leicestershire is being run next week.
On Tuesday 21 October Councillor Ben Taylor, Leader of Blaby District Council, will host an information session in Narborough to give residents and businesses the chance to learn more about a proposal to replace existing district, borough and county councils with two new councils across Leicestershire and Rutland.
The proposal, which would see Leicester City's boundaries remain the same, has been produced by the seven district and borough councils of Leicestershire, and Rutland County Council following government instruction to reduce the number of councils in the area.
The Meet the Leader – Local Government Reorganisation event
When: Tuesday 21 October
5.30pm to 7.30pm
Where: Blaby District Council Offices, Desford Road, Narborough, LE19 2EP
Places are limited and can be booked online at www.blaby.gov.uk/leader-LGR
Councillor Ben Taylor said: “We’ve taken a collaborative approach to reviewing local government in Leicestershire since the government outlined plans to introduce unitary councils across the country.
“Across the summer we received more than 6,000 responses to our engagement events which have underpinned our plans, but I know communities want to know what is in it for them. This event gives me the opportunity to speak directly to residents, to outline our proposals and to help answer questions people may have about this once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape local government.”
Blaby District Council is among the seven district and borough councils of Leicestershire and Rutland County Council which have produced the North, City, South plan of three unitary councils delivering all council services; one serving North Leicestershire and Rutland, another serving South Leicestershire, working alongside Leicester City Council.
The eight councils submitted an interim plan to government in March and consulted extensively, following government feedback, in July and August 2025.
Further details of the North, City, South proposal can be found at www.northcitysouth.co.uk.
