Leader responds to LGR decision
The Leader of Blaby District Council, Councillor Ben Taylor, has responded to the government’s decision on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Cllr Taylor said: “I’m extremely disappointed that the government has chosen to support a two-unitary model for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, as I firmly share the view of the districts, boroughs and Rutland County Council, that the North, City, South model would have delivered better outcomes for our communities.
“Under this decision, many areas in Blaby District would form part of a unitary council for Leicester, alongside all of Oadby & Wigston and areas from Charnwood and Harborough. The remainder of the district would join a separate council covering the rest of Leicestershire and Rutland.
“We will now carefully consider the Government's decision alongside our partner authorities and take advice on the options available to us as we determine the most appropriate way forward.
“Our priority remains ensuring residents, businesses and communities across Blaby District are represented and that any future arrangements deliver high quality, value-for-money local services.
“While we are disappointed by today's announcement, we will continue to stand up for the interests of our communities throughout the next stages of this process.
“It is important to reassure residents that at this stage there are no changes to council services, they will continue as normal and residents should contact Blaby District Council in the usual way. The new Council will not come into force until April 2028."
