Advice event for landlords and letting agents
People who rent out local homes to tenants are being invited to free events to get to grips with new laws that came into force in May.
Blaby District Council is holding two landlord forums on Tuesday 23 June to explain and discuss key reforms introduced as part of the Renters’ Rights Act.
These include an end to no fault evictions, banning rental bidding wars and giving tenants more freedom to have pets.
The in-person events at the Blaby District Council Offices on Desford Road in Narborough are open to all landlords and letting agents.
• Morning session from 9.30am until 12pm
• Afternoon session from 1.30pm to 4.30pm
Guest speakers include representatives from Decent and Safe Homes (DASH), East Midlands Property Owners (EMPO), local letting agent Ashton and Co, and representatives from across the Council.
Landlords and agents will hear more about the new private tenant rules, along with details from the Council on support available and other sector updates.
Councillor Susan Findlay, Blaby District Council Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “The Renters’ Right Act has introduced new protections for renters and new requirements for landlords. We know most landlords and letting agents want to do the right thing, and we’re committed to helping them navigate these changes.
“This is an ideal opportunity to learn more about the changes, find out about opportunities and incentives and to ask questions of experts who have been supporting landlords across the East Midlands. We have a duty to ensure tenants in privately-rented homes have decent places to live and are treated fairly, and we’re here to work with the sector to help achieve this.”
The Council is hosting the forum in partnership with two industry bodies for landlords – EMPO and DASH.
Also on the agenda will be an update on Awaab’s Law, relating to damp and mould in homes; details on Housing Benefit and Universal Credit changes; and information about incentives for landlords to support homeless households.
Places are limited. To confirm a slot email tenancy.services@blaby.gov.uk by 15 June.
