Interested in being a Councillor?
Blaby District Council is urging local people to learn more about being a voice for their neighbourhoods in the run-up to elections next year.
On Thursday 6 May 2027 all 36 seats representing the 17 wards of Blaby District are up for election. All Parish Council seats will also be up for election.
Councillors play a key role in representing communities, influencing decisions and shaping Blaby District’s future. They speak up for the people, places and communities they know best, bringing their personal skills and experience to local government.
Having councillors from a wide range of backgrounds is vital in bringing diverse perspectives to decision-making.
To help shed light on the role and encourage people to get involved a special Be a Councillor event is running from 6pm on Wednesday 25 November in the Council Chamber.
Attendees will gain an insight into what it means being a Councillor, what commitment is necessary, how you can work for the public good and the elections process.
Officers and existing councillors will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. There will also be materials to take away for further reading.
Blaby District Council Chief Executive, Julia Smith, said: "Whether you’re considering standing for election or simply curious about the role, this event offers an insight into local democracy and public service in a relaxed, welcoming environment.
"You don't need political experience to become a Councillor, belong to a political party, be retired, have specialist knowledge or be an expert in local politics. What matters most is a commitment to your community and a willingness to get involved.
"We want people from all backgrounds, ages and experiences to consider how they could contribute to local decision-making. Becoming a Councillor can be challenging but the role offers so many opportunities. It allows you to represent your local community, influence decisions affecting local people, help shape local services and priorities and make a positive difference to the area where you live or work."
