Home Gadgets are changing lives

A cross-border scheme helping people to live independently in their own home is celebrating a three-year milestone.

The Home Gadgets service launched in May 2022 as part of Blaby District Council’s Lightbulb project.

It runs across the seven District and Borough Councils in Leicestershire, and since launching it has supported 3,141 cases, providing vulnerable residents with life-changing equipment.

It means people with long-term physical, mental or neurological health conditions can remain in their homes, easing pressure on health and social care.

Gadgets are free of charge and aimed at tackling small problems while making a big difference. Items might include digital calendar clocks, multi-openers or smart doorbells.

Councillor Cheryl Cashmore, Blaby District Council Portfolio Holder for Health and Leisure, said: “We are extremely proud of our Lightbulb Service which helps people across the County to remain at home. The Home Gadgets project, introduced in 2022, has been a huge success and an amazing addition to the support we can offer residents.

“It’s fabulous to see how these simple items – a smart hub for example or multi-opener – can make such a difference to the daily lives of people. They contribute so much in overcoming barriers, ensuring residents can live more independently in their own homes for longer.”

The service routinely seeks feedback from people who have been helped. A few of the comments include:

“I’m using all the items, they are brilliant! They are making life so much easier”

“All items supplied have made tasks manageable and doable compared to the time before when no gadgets were used. The items have enhanced Linda’s life to make it more enjoyable and to keep her independence.”

One resident was asked if they would recommend Home Gadgets to others and replied: “The answer to this has to be an overwhelming yes as the project allows people to carry on being more independent in their own homes with the equipment supplied.”
