Former landfill site works complete

Initial works to install gas mitigation as part of plans to rewild the land at the rear of Huncote Leisure Centre, including the former BMX track, have been completed. This included undertaking work on the closed BMX track itself.
New monitoring and gas venting equipment has been installed as part of our responsibility to ensure the long-term safety of the site.
Now only the former BMX track is fenced off. We would urge people to respect this cordoned area. The fencing has been put in place as the area is not safe to access and any trespassers could injure themselves.
The wider field is now open to the public, however, people are urged to remember the land remains uneven and is still an actively managed former landfill site, therefore in no circumstances should BBQs or naked flames be used in the area.
Signage, warning of these hazards, is in place.
Plans for the rewilding of the overall site are being looked at and may include various planting schemes, depending on suitability given the area’s previous use for landfill.
We are committed to the continued responsible management and monitoring of the site. Maintaining safety remains our key priority for future users of the space and the surrounding area.
