Council supports White Ribbon Campaign
School presentations, promise signing and specialised workshops are part of Blaby District Council’s support for this year’s White Ribbon Campaign.
The globally recognised initiative seeks to raise awareness of gender equality, and particularly the role men and boys can take to end male violence against females.
This year’s theme is We Speak Up and officers and councillors will all be making the White Ribbon promise to “never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women and girls”.
Starting on White Ribbon Day itself - today Tuesday 25 November - the Council is holding a coffee morning for staff, outlining the campaign and its aims and encouraging people to make the White Ribbon promise.
Visits to local primary schools are planned with officers talking to 10 and 11-year- olds as part of a commitment to the campaign’s 16 days of action.
Discussion will include gender stereotypes, healthy relationships and what makes a good friend and speaking up about inappropriate situations.
Internal workshops will feature the importance of male allyships and how everyday interventions can make a real difference in stemming harmful sexist attitudes.
The activity will be posted on internal and external channels, including social media, to raise awareness and promote public support.
Councillor Ben Taylor, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: "It’s a shocking statistic but every year, one in 12 women or girls will be the victim of violence. We recognise that not all men commit violence and abuse against women and girls, but all men can work to prevent it.
"This year’s campaign is about speaking up, so we can all contribute to a more equal, respectful society. Our message to staff, councillors and the public is - don’t let sexism slide. What may be perceived as low-level acts of abuse such as cat calling, intrusive staring or sharing sexist jokes, all normalise sexism and misogyny. We can all play a role in culture change and creating a safer world for women and girls."
