Support with Food

On this page we have put together some information and useful links to help anyone needing support with feeding themselves and their families.

Food banks

Food banks are non-profit, charitable organisations that distribute food for those in need. There are several food banks in the district that you may access. We have included access details below.

Glenfield Community Food Hub

The Glenfield Community Food Hub is open for residents of Glenfield and allows drop-in visits. Please note that you will need to provide proof of residency in the Glenfield area.

The hub is open on alternate Saturdays from 9am to 12pm and can be found at The Annex (the old library next to Morrison’s new car park), located off Station Road, Glenfield, Leicester, LE3 8BQ.

You can find more information, including the dates the hub is open, on the Glenfield Parish Council website. There is a link to the website at the bottom of this page.

Mission:Foodbank

The Mission:Foodbank is open for residents of Enderby and surrounding areas, including Blaby, Whetstone and Narborough.

You can contact the food bank for support by email (support@missionfoodbank.org) and by telephone (0116 482 4893).

The Mission:Foodbank is provided by Enderby Life Church, and you can find more information on their website. There is a link to the website at the bottom of this page.

All other areas

Where there is no food bank in your area, you may be able to receive support through the Community Hub. Further details can be found on our Community Hub page.

Food in the community

In addition to food banks, there are other ways to access food in your local communities. These schemes also encourage sharing fresh food to reduce food waste. We have included access details below.

Braunstone Town Community Fridge

The Community Fridge helps reduce food waste by providing surplus food from supermarkets and even residents own cupboards!

Some of this food includes fresh baked items, pasta, rice, and cereals. Some other items can include household essentials like toilet roll, sanitary products, and body wash.

The Community Fridge is located at St Crispin’s Church, every Tuesday between 2pm and 3pm.

No referral or registration is required to access the Community Fridge, and everything is free of charge. We ask that you bring shopping bags for your items, including small reusable or resealable bags and only take items that you need and will use. Please note, the quantity of stock will vary from week to week.

Community Apps

There are some food sharing community apps available for download to your phone.

Too Good to Go is an app that lets users rescue food from restaurants and takeaways before being thrown away. Usually a surprise bag, the food is sold at a much lower price and can be reserved for collection at a time set by the restaurant.

Olio is an app that lets users advertise and claim food items for free to save them from being thrown away. Users will need to collect the items but can specify their search to a certain area that is easier for them to collect from.

There are links to the websites of both apps at the bottom of this page, and there are other food sharing apps available, so residents can find one that is right for them.

Please note that Blaby District Council does not endorse these apps and that the inclusion of a link to an external website from blaby.gov.uk is not an endorsement of that website.

Helping food go further

In times where every penny counts, it is just as important to make sure all food ingredients count. There are services offering advice on how to reduce food waste in the home and use leftovers.

GoLearn! runs courses on healthy eating and zero waste. Visit their website to learn more about the course and enrol. There is a link to the website at the bottom of this page.

Less Waste is run by the Leicestershire Waste Partnership and has advice on reducing food waste, making meals stretch and meal planning. To find out more information you can visit their website linked at the bottom of this page.

The Love Food Hate Waste website has recipes for using leftovers, hints and tips for storing food to help it last longer, and information on what the food date labels mean. It also has a portion calculator to help cook the right amount. There is a link to the website at the bottom of this page.

Pets

Some residents may be worried about feeding their pets as well as themselves. Many food banks will also have pet food available for residents. But if not, there is advice available from the RSPCA.

You can also find information on the support available for pets through the PDSA and Dogs Trust. There are links to the websites at the bottom of this page.
