The event will give you the opportunity to:
- Find out what it is like to be a district councillor.
- Learn about the role councillors play in shaping local services and decision-making.
- Understand who can stand for election and the eligibility requirements.
- Hear about the support and training available to councillors.
- Ask questions and speak with current councillors and council officers.
You Don't Need Political Experience
Many people assume that you need a background in politics to become a councillor. In reality, councillors come from a wide range of backgrounds, professions and life experiences.
You do not need to:
- Belong to a political party
- Have previous political experience
- Be retired
- Be an expert in local government
Skills and experience gained through work, volunteering, caring responsibilities, family life and involvement in your community can all be valuable.
What matters most is a commitment to your community and a willingness to represent local residents

Councillors represent the people, places and communities they know best. We want people from all backgrounds, ages and experiences to consider how they could contribute to local decision-making in Blaby District.
A diverse council helps ensure that the needs and views of our communities are understood and reflected in the decisions that affect local people.
