Blaby District Youth Council

Blaby District Youth Council is a group for young people, who live or go to school in the District, aged between 11 and 19 (or up to age 24 with additional needs.

They represent the views of young people throughout the District giving them the opportunity to have a voice, to discuss relevant issues, engage with decision-makers and contribute to improving the lives of young people within their communities.

The Youth Council also have a grants scheme where they are able to award money to projects they feel will benefit the community, to give the district a bigger range of courses and activities for young people.

Below are some of the organisations that have benefitted from Youth Council funding: -

  • 3rd Braunstone Brownies
  • Enderby Junior Dodgeball Club
  • Hathi Productions Ltd
  • Kirby Muxloe 88 JFC
  • LCC Whetstone St Peters CE Primary School
  • Reality Youth Project
  • Streetvibe
  • Whetstone PCC

Below are just some of the things we have achieved as a Youth Council:

We visited Parliament where we were given a tour, took part in a representation and voting workshop and had a Questions and Answer session with our local MP.

We helped to develop Parliament educational material for young people in Leicestershire.

We took part in a consultation on anti social behaviour.

We organised a hate awareness event, in partnership with Leicestershire Police, which was attended by Parish Councils, District Councillors and people from local voluntary organisations working with young people.

We held a health and wellbeing event for young people at our local leisure centre. We had information on services available to young people and health and physical exercise related activities

We invited Magistrates from our local court to attend a meeting where they ran a mock trial. We were introduced to the legal system through an interactive experience.

We attended the British Youth Council Annual Council Meeting in Cardiff where we put forward a policy motion on self harm, which was accepted into their manifesto for 2018/19.

We wrote scripts, which were then made into 3 short films to raise awareness around self harm in young people. The aims of the project were to:

Encourage young people to speak out and get support

Deliver a message 'It can get better'

Raise awareness

We held a launch evening at Brockington College and hope the films will be shared with as many people as possible.
