Coronavirus pandemic

Coronavirus: information and advice.

Council Tax online services will be unavailable between Saturday 8 May 4pm and Sunday 9 May 12pm due to essential maintenance. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Adapted Bulky Item Collection Service

If you are looking to dispose of unwanted household items that are too big for your bin, the council are now able to offer an adapted collection service that will comply with guidance on social distancing during the current Coronavirus outbreak. As before, the service will be available to all domestic households within the district.

  • This means that only one member of staff from our operational team can make the collections, and the list of items we are able to collect has had to change. Only items that can be safely handled by one operative (with a sack barrow) can be collected
  • It’s important therefore that the suitability of the item/s are agreed at the point of ordering a collection. So bookings can only be made over the telephone at this time. Our online booking service will continue to be unavailable, but the usual £2 surcharge for telephone bookings will be waived
  • Customers are politely asked to also apply social distancing from our collection operative by remaining at least 2 metres away from them, and not providing any assistance with lifting or moving items
  • Additionally, to reduce the risk of virus transmission, we also ask that you present your item/s at the collection point at least 3 days in advance of your collection day. Please ensure that your item/s is visible, accessible and close to the front of your property
  • Collections at this time will take place on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays, and each day will be in a specific area of the district, which will allow us to maximise the number of collection slots available
  • This service is unfortunately not available for businesses. Please see our Trade Collections page for more information on how we can help businesses dispose of waste

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the item is too heavy or big to be safely loaded on to the vehicle by a single operative with a sack barrow?

The item will not be collected and the usual policy on refunds will apply. Please make sure the item can be collected safely by one person. The revised list of items above is a guide only.

What should I do if my item(s) is not collected by 3pm?

If it has not been collected it will be because it is either too big or heavy to load safely onto the vehicle by one person, in which case we will not return to collect the item(s).

If you think it may have been missed by mistake, please call us on 0116 272 7555.

Why is there a specified day of collection?

Due to limited resources we can only operate on certain days of the week. We have zoned the district to be as efficient as possible which will make sure we can collect from as many customers as we can.

Why are you only operating collections with a one person crew?

So that where possible we comply with government advice and industry guidelines on social distancing

Why is this telephone only? Why can’t I order online?

The usual online system is not yet compatible with this adapted service for collecting bulky waste. Also, customers are better able to check and confirm with our Customer Service Advisors which items are accepted before placing and paying for their order.

Why do I have to put out the item 3 days before collection?

This is because the virus can remain present on material for up to 72 hours. This is a safety precaution to help keep our crews safe.

Where should I leave my item(s) for collection?

Please ensure that your item(s) is highly visible, accessible and close to the front of your property.

We will not be able to collect items from inside any buildings on your property, or where they are not presented in a clearly visible and accessible position.

What happens if I do not have space at the front of my property and so can only leave my item(s) on the pavement.

Unfortunately in this case we cannot provide the service. This is because the item will need to be out for 72 hours before our operators collect it and the items must not be left on the highway (including the public pavement) for this length of time.

Can you take sacks/bags of refuse or recycling on the bulky service?

No, if you need more refuse or recycling capacity please see our ‘order bins’ online webpage, where you can order a larger or extra bin (charges may apply).
