The Electoral Register

What is the electoral register?

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in a Council area. The Electoral Registration Officer has a statutory duty to compile the register each year.

The register is updated on a monthly basis.

Checking whether you are on the register

To check whether your details are already on the electoral register, please contact the Electoral Services team using the contact form below.

The open register

Two versions of the register are kept. The Full Register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote. Credit reference agencies can use this version, but only to check names and addresses of those applying for credit and other purposes specified in law. This register can also be used for law enforcement.

The Open Register is available for general sale and can be bought by any person, company or organisation to be used for commercial activities such as marketing. You have the right to opt out of the open register at any time.

If you would like your details to be removed from the open register you should complete this online form.

Inspecting the electoral register

The electoral register is available for inspection at our offices. Please note that the following rules apply to persons inspecting the electoral register:

  • The register is open to public inspection, under supervision
  • Extracts from the register may be recorded only by making handwritten notes. Photocopying or electronic recording is not permitted by law
  • Information taken from the register must not be used for direct marketing purposes unless the information has been published in the edited version of the register
  • The register is set out in polling districts and split by street name. It is not possible to search the register by name, as this is not permitted in law

Anyone who fails to observe these conditions is committing a criminal offence. The penalty is a fine of up to £5,000.

You should contact the Electoral Services team using the form below if you would like to view the register.
