Unwanted Littlethorpe development refused

Refused development in Littlethorpe

An application to build over 100 homes in Littlethorpe has been refused by Blaby District Council’s Planning Committee.

Plans were submitted by Gladman Developments Ltd in March for outline permission to build up to 108 homes on land off Oak Road. The application was recommended for refusal by Planning Officers as it conflicts with policies set out by the Blaby District Local Plan, which seeks to promote sustainable development.

The application was submitted with no prior discussion with the Council and proposed development on land designated as countryside. According to the report prepared by Planning Officers, the development would have caused: “Significant harm to the character and appearance of the local landscape and countryside and the character of the village.”

The Council can also show that the current required minimum housing numbers in the villages classed as “Medium Central Villages,” including Littlethorpe, have already been exceeded.

Blaby District Council can also demonstrate more than the required five-year supply of housing land, putting it in a stronger position to refuse applications for development on inappropriate sites.

Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio Holder for Planning, Housing Strategy and Economic Development, said: “This application is unwanted and we are glad it has been refused. The Local Plan sets out robust policies on how much housing is needed in our villages and the land in question is countryside and we do not need this land to be used for housing. It would have harmed the village of Littlethorpe”.

“Our extensive work on the Local Plan has ensured we can protect the countryside and villages across the district from unsuitable levels of development on speculative sites.”
