New toilets with an accessible toilet coming to Blaby

Blaby Village Centre

Blaby District Council is delighted to have secured nearly £70,000 in Government funding to install a ‘Changing Places toilet’ in Blaby Village Centre.

A Changing Places toilet is a larger, accessible toilet for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets. It includes equipment such as hoists, curtains, adult-sized changing benches, and space for carers.

The Changing Places toilet for accessible users only, will feature as part of a new toilet block.

More information about the progress of the toilet’s construction, including its planned location and timescales, will now be worked through involving local businesses and the Parish Council to ensure that it best meets the needs of all residents and visitors.

Blaby District Council has been working to secure the long-term future of the toilets in Blaby Village Centre for a significant period of time, and had already committed £100,000 capital funding into the project, giving a project budget totalling £170,000.

The extra funding comes from the Government’s £30 million Changing Places Toilet fund. There are currently around 1,200 registered Changing Places toilets in England, with over 250,000 people in the country needing these facilities to enable them to get out and about and enjoy the day-to-day activities.

Councillor Nigel Grundy, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhood Services and Assets Portfolio Holder, said: “This is fantastic news for Blaby Village Centre. These facilities are absolutely vital to those who need them, and we are pleased to have taken advantage of this funding opportunity which the team have been working on for a long time.”

“We have been and continue to be committed to supporting the shoppers and businesses in Blaby Village Centre by ensuring that appropriate toilet facilities are in place for shoppers and that they are designed well and can serve the community for a long time going forwards.”
