The first primary school under construction in New Lubbesthorpe has inspired its first set of young people.

Twelve students from Years 10 and 11 at Countesthorpe Leysland Community College visited the school’s site, offering them a tour of the construction area, and giving them an understanding of the various trades involved and the construction programme.

Organised by Blaby District Council’s Partnerships team; Dave Swift, Contracts Manager from Clegg Construction, the company building the school, offered an insight into the various technical careers on offer in the sector.

One of the visiting student’s parents said that their son had: “Talked non-stop about the visit and that it had opened his eyes to other jobs in construction. She commented that her son “normally comes back from trips hardly saying anything but this time has told me everything he had done and seen.”

The Council are working “Changing the Face of Construction” curriculum support activities for girls in years eight and nine in the District of Blaby in March. At least 90 girls will attend the events. The girls will hear presentation from female construction mentors and participate in ‘Go Construct’ activities.
