At Blaby District Council we have over 300 staff that all help strive to make the district a great place to live, work and visit. The majority of our employees are based at our main offices in Narborough, but we also have a separate site nearby where our Neighbourhood Services are located.

The Council offers a wide range of services, which include electoral services, refuse and recycling collection, district cleansing, health and safety, food safety, dog warden services, licensing, enforcement, housing, community safety, sport and leisure facilities, planning, building control, council tax collection and housing benefits.

How long have you worked at the Council? 15 years.
Tell us a bit about your role. I manage the Environmental Services Team, we are responsible for Licensing, Air Quality, Car Parks, Climate Change, Contaminated Land and Animal Welfare.
What do you love most about your job? The variety, it’s very rare that two days are the same.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I applied for a job as a Scientific Officer, it was my first proper job after leaving university. Since then Blaby has given me lots of opportunities to grow and develop and supported me to become a manager.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Blaby is a great employer, it has given me opportunities and I feel like I am helping people by working here.
How long have you worked at the Council? I started in December 2019.
Tell us a bit about your role. I’ve been appointed to the newly created Green Officer Role where I will be acting as lead officer for work streams linked to Climate Change and the Green Agenda. I will be working with Green champions across the Council to ensure all services consider climate change in the work they do, and implementing a Green Offer for the Council to address how as an organisation we tackle the climate emergency at a local level.
What do you love most about your job? Although it’s very early days it’s exciting to be in a new position where there’s scope to be creative in how I approach it. I’m looking forward to the prospect of working with a wide range of people, learning more about the organisation and driving environmental improvements.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I worked here for a short period as an Environment Protection Officer ten years ago when I first moved to Leicester. It was a great team to work for then so when this position came up I had no qualms about applying as I knew I would be joining a friendly and supportive environment.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Blaby District Council is taking the climate emergency seriously and there is real enthusiasm and support to make the necessary changes that will benefit both the environment and the community. I’m proud to part of that.
How long have you worked at the Council? 8 years.
Tell us a bit about your role. I manage the partnership service to deliver the disabled facilities grant for applicants. These grants help people make essential adaptations to their homes to keep them safe and independent for longer.
What do you love most about your job? I come to work to help people and make a difference, the best way I can do that is supporting the people on the frontline. My role involves partnership working, negotiating, influencing and reviewing to ensure the teams have what they need to deliver.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? Being empowered to develop ideas.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Everyone who works here has the customer at the centre of what we do.
How long have you worked at the Council? One year and three months.
Tell us a bit about your role. My role entails contacting partners that are part of the Tourism Partnership. I also meet new businesses who are interested in joining and keep regular contact with them, and contact the parish councils to enquire about local events that I use to populate the Visit Blaby website. On the other side of my job I sit with Licensing and have learnt how to use uniform and I have also assisted with taxi tests and changing diffusion tubes.
What do you love most about your job? The thing I love most is the variety, I am able to go and meet new people and see new places around the district. As well as going out and doing a variety of different jobs which is helping me gain more experience.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? The attraction for me was the reputation of the Council, there is always opportunity to change job and move to a different area and try new things. I have a pension already which started when I was 17. Also it looks good on a CV having worked at the Council because it is known to be a great place to work.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? The people I work with, the services they deliver and how committed they are to their jobs and the residents of the district. I am also proud to work at the Council because of my achievements whist being here and watching tourism grow.
How long have you worked at the Council? Since June 2017.
Tell us a bit about your role. I support a number of teams within the Council including Planning and Economic Development, Health, Leisure and Regulatory Services and also our Community Services Team which includes Housing, Revenues and Benefits, Early Help and Prevention and our Lightbulb Partnership. I also help to support our elected members in their work and the Corporate Governance of the Council. I represent Blaby on a number of Partnerships and bodies (such as Leicestershire and Rutland Sport Board and the Tourism Advisory Board) which allows me to spot opportunities and develop relationships for the benefit of our district.
What do you love most about your job? Two things really, the variety, every day is different, it is never dull and boring in local government! And the people, I get to meet some great people whether they are volunteers supporting our communities, partners who are helping us to achieve our priorities or our residents who are seeking the very best service from our Council.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? Blaby has a reputation across Leicestershire for being a Council that partners and businesses want to work with, we are a partner of choice, Blaby is known as a welcoming Council with a ‘can do’ attitude. That culture very much suits my style and approach as I like to make things happen and I like to make a difference. It is not always possible but it is great to work in a place that isn’t afraid of trying!
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? I am actually born and bred in the district and as such I know the place and I have a very strong affection for all of the villages, the organisations (especially sporting ones as that is my hobby!) and the residents. I am proud, privileged and lucky to be able to work and support the communities that I grew up within.
How long have you worked at the Council? Just over nine years.
Tell us a bit about your role. When I first started here I was employed as a Community Safety Officer to tackle anti-social behaviour. However, for the last six years I’ve worked in the Community Development Team and I’m now the Funding and Awards Officer. I coordinate the Council’s Community Grants Scheme and the Love Blaby Lottery. A large part of my role is to help local not-for-profit organisations access these and other initiatives we offer, so they can continue with their vital work in the local community. I am also responsible for writing funding bids on behalf of the Council to help us to deliver exciting projects and initiatives for our residents.
What do you love most about your job? It’s very inspiring to hear about the vast range of amazing community projects that exist and are springing up all the time in the district. Not to mention the thousands of volunteers that run them. It’s also hugely satisfying to be in a position where I can play a part in helping these organisations to raise funds and keep making a difference.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? Whilst I was new to the area when I started work here, I had worked in the public sector for many years so I knew pretty much what to expect. However my first impressions of the Council at interview, particularly my manager-to-be, were first rate.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Being part of a team that is truly committed to community, even when times are tight.
How long have you worked at the Council? 16 years.
Tell us a bit about your role. I am the Development Services Manager and a Chartered Town Planner. The Development Services Team process and make decisions on planning and other applications.
What do you love most about your job? No two days are the same. Town planning is about sustainable development and helping to physically shape the places where we live, work and play. For planning applications this means balancing the economic, environmental and social impacts of new development. We seek to support development that helps deliver the vision set out in the Council’s Local Plan and work with the local community, landowners, businesses, developers and other organisations to achieve this.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I have worked in five different posts during my 16 years at the Council being promoted several times. In my experience, the Council recognises and develops the potential of its staff. I have been given many opportunities for training and career development.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Our approach to Development Management. In 2019 we won the LGC Housing Initiative Award and the RTPI East Midlands Awards for Excellence in Planning to Deliver Homes and the Best Overall Project.
How long have you worked at the Council? A few months.
Tell us a bit about your role. I deal with a variety of functions from raising orders and invoices to liaising with Leicestershire County Council on materials for recycling and how much waste has gone to landfill. I’m involved with the implementation of new systems to be more efficient in our processes. This involves moving all refuse and recycling crews from a paper based system to an electronic system with in-cab technology as well.
What do you love most about your job? The staff here are great, if I’m unsure of anything there is someone who will offer to help whether that’s from my department or a different department altogether.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I was looking to move house and I found a nice place in Huncote, and working for Blaby made travelling to and from work a lot more convenient.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? The work I am involved in has a direct impact on our residents and I want to make that as much of a positive impact as possible, as I want the residents of Blaby District to see the positive changes.
How long have you worked at the Council? Just over two years.
Tell us a bit about your role. I started here as an apprentice learning Level 2 Business Admin in the Environmental Services team. I enjoyed this thoroughly and was supported throughout. I then continued to do this for another year to complete my Level 3. A full time position came up, which I applied for and I am now a full time Neighbourhood Services Support Officer. I help to run the admin side of things and they have been supporting me while I finish my Level 3 Business Administration Qualification.
What do you love most about your role? I love how supporting and friendly both my teams have been to me and to one another.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I wanted a complete change in career and looking at what Blaby District Council had to offer, I knew it was the job for me.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? The day in, day out dedication of my team providing quality services to the best of their ability and what Blaby District Council provides for its residents and community.
How long have you worked at the Council? Almost three years.
Tell us a bit about your role. I am the Employment, Skills and Training Coordinator for the strategic development sites in Blaby District. I work closely with construction partners at New Lubbesthorpe, Everards Meadows and Fosse West, plus the District Education Providers, DWP, the probation service, national and local charities. My role is to source the construction workers of the future. I initiate recruitment initiatives and arrange work experience for school and college students. I also organise work experience for ‘hard to reach’ groups including long term unemployed and ex- offenders. I deliver construction related curriculum support activities and coordinate educational site visits.
What do you love most about your job? It’s varied, no two days are the same, and I like meeting a broad range of people from diverse backgrounds.
What attracted you to work at Blaby District Council? I had previously been seconded to the Council for one day a week whilst working for a Leicester Charity, I was impressed by the ethos, residents definitely come first.
What makes you proud to work at Blaby District Council? Feeling as though I’ve made a difference to people’s lives! It may sound a bit of a cliché, but there is nothing more rewarding than learning that an individual you have been supporting has been given an apprenticeship or an offer of permanent employment, these opportunities can change an individual’s future.
