Taxi and Private Hire Licensing

We have been working hard to minimise the impact of Covid-19 on our services. Temporary changes have been introduced to our licensing service as we have had to reduce staffing levels in the office each day.

All face to face contact in respect of private hire/hackney carriage licences is suspended until further notice. The only exception to this will be an appointment that allows collection of a renewed licence. You will be allocated an appointment time and date when your new licence is ready to collect.

New Applications

Unfortunately until further notice we will not be accepting any applications for new private hire or hackney carriage drivers as it is not currently possible to carry out and complete all the necessary checks and training required.

Renewal Applications

Renewal applications are being processed in the usual way. You should complete the application form and submit the required documents with it. This can either be by email to please attach your scanned application and supporting documents or you can post them into the letter box at the Council Offices, please ensure you put all documents into an envelope and mark it for the attention of the Licensing Team. You must ensure that your vehicle has had a mechanical test prior to making your renewal application and that the application is made in good time as processing is taking longer due to the reduction of staff and time delay in getting post.

Vehicle Inspections

Until further notice all Certificates of Compliance will continue to last for the full length of your current licence. In light of this no additional mechanical vehicle testing will be required unless you are renewing your vehicle licence.

The licence holder will be responsible for making sure that their vehicle is and remains roadworthy at all times

Knowledge & Highway Code Tests

All knowledge and Highway Code tests have been suspended until further notice. We will contact applicants who had a test cancelled to re-arrange a new test date when it is deemed safe to do so and normal services resume.

Temporary Protective Screens

In light of the easing of some of the lockdown restrictions you may now be looking at a gradual return to work. To enable your return to work and to help protect you and your passengers you may be considering the introduction of a protective screen between the driver and passenger seats. Blaby District Council are happy for drivers to install temporary protective screens.

Prior to installation of a temporary screen you must first check with your insurance company that the installation will not invalidate your vehicle insurance. Once you have confirmation that the installation is acceptable you must then notify the Licensing team on the request form.

No installation should be made in the vehicle before you have submitted a request form to the Council. All screens must be temporary and not alter or modify your vehicle on a permanent basis. The request form can be found below in the download section of this page.

Advice for Drivers

The Government has published transport guidance for operators and passengers in England.

To support this, please see the link in the downloads section of this page for Q & A's for the taxi and private hire sector containing further links to the guidance and answers to common questions.

An advice and guidance sheet has been produced and issued to all drivers who should, where possible, try to ensure that they take every precaution to protect themselves and their passengers at all times.

To view the above documents and other relevant guidance please see the links in the downloads section below.

We ask that you keep referring to this page for updates as current guidance changes we will endeavour to up date where relevant.

Further information, guidance and support for yourself and your business can be found on the Councils dedicated Coronavirus web page.
