Volunteering

You can volunteer as a ranger on our countryside recreation areas. It’s a great way to get fit, meet people and enjoy the fresh air.

What you'll need

  • Good communication skills – meaning having the ability to listen to the public who have questions and comments and answer them to the best of your ability
  • An ability to mix with and get along with all types of people as you will meet and deal with a wide cross-section of the community and work with other volunteers
  • An appreciation and enjoyment of the countryside – this is probably the main reason to become a Volunteer Ranger, however the Countryside Recreation Areas are not only about wildlife but also about people accessing and appreciating the countryside
  • And last, but no means least, enthusiasm!

What a Volunteer Ranger does

Activities are varied and you can choose with the Countryside Officer which ones you wish to participate in.

  • Help on practical conservation tasks
  • Help improving footpaths and access
  • Assist with guided walks
  • Research local heritage, archaeology, etc
  • Flora and fauna surveys
  • Assist the public on site by giving information and advise
  • Take photographical records of the sites and their flora and fauna
  • Monitor the sites

You can dedicate as much time to any of these activities as you wish.

As a Volunteer Ranger you will be supplied with a uniform and you will also be issued with, litter picker, gloves and plastic bags. You will also be able to attend training relating to the work they do including First Aid, manual handling, hedge laying and other traditional skills.

For more information and a Volunteer Ranger starter pack please contact the Countryside Officer using the form at the bottom of this page.
