The Local Economy

Blaby District is situated in the south-west of the county of Leicestershire, covering an area of approximately 50 square miles (13,000 hectares). The District offers a diverse mix of urban and rural environments with no principal town, but 24 parishes varying in population. Blaby District is an economically prosperous area.

The Economic Development Strategy 2016 - 2019 outlines priorities the council and partners will act on so that our local economy works well.

Both the M1 and M69 motorways run through the local area meeting at Junction 21 towards the north of the District, providing access to key transportation routes and a factor in economic success the area experiences. Major cities such as Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Coventry and Birmingham are within easy reach, whilst London is just two hours drive away.

Significant housing development has been seen over the last 20 years, with a large growth in its resident population nearing 99,000. New business and retail parks close to Junction 21 of the M1 have also been constructed. Blaby District is one of the prime locations for distribution and office accommodation in the County centred on Grove Park, Carlton Park, Meridian Business Park and Optimus Point.

The first phase of New Lubbesthorpe is underway, one of the district's flagship developments which will see a new community built of 4,250 new homes, 21 hectares of employment site, three schools, shops and community/leisure facilities.

Key sectors of jobs in Blaby District are professional and financial services, transport and logistics.

There were over 4,000 registered businesses registered in Blaby in 2017 with 98.1% employing less than 50 people. Growth sectors for the local economy include finance and insurance, logistics, advanced manufacturing, tourism, retail and hospitality.

The District has a wide range of leisure facilities including two leisure centres, six golf courses, a National Diving Centre at Stoney Cove and a jet ski centre as well as nature parks at Fosse Meadows and Bouskell Park.

Meridian Leisure Park, near junction 21 of the M1, is a popular attraction with multi-screen cinema, bowling alley, fitness centre and numerous restaurants. Fosse Shopping Park is one of the UK’s biggest out-of-town retail parks. A high-profile extension, Castle Acres, will soon be constructed on the site of the old Everards Brewery. Everards will be moving to a purpose-built site adjacent to their old headquarters with the building of Everards Meadows.
