Stray Dogs

Summary

On the 6th April 2008 Local Authorities will become responsible for all stray dogs and the Police will no longer detain or accept stray dogs from members of the public.

Blaby's Dog Wardens collect stray dogs from a variety of public places, members of the public on request and also from Police stations. Every dog is taken to our appointed kennels, unless emergency veterinary treatment is required first.

Further information

A dog is classified as a stray if it is unleashed or unsupervised on a road or public place, whether or not it is wearing an identification tag.

All dogs, when in a public place must wear a collar and tag which clearly shows on it the name and address of the dog owner. It is an offence against the law not to do so, and the owner will be liable to be prosecuted and fined. Even if your dog is micro-chipped, or tattooed, it still needs to wear a collar and tag.

Owners of Dogs that are identified by name tags, microchip or tattoo will be contacted by phone and letter as soon as possible and advised of the procedure for collection. All payment must be made at the main Council Offices where the owner can identify their dog from a photograph.

Charges

The current charges for collection of strays are:-

  • £30.00 - Stray Dog Fee
  • £20.00 - Administration Fee (This fee includes having your dog micro-chipped however, it is only incurred by dog owners when the dog is unidentified by name tag, microchip or tattoo)
  • £10.00 - Kennelling per day or part of day
  • Any Vet fees incurred must also be paid prior to release

If a dog is not claimed by its owner within 7 days then the Council will attempt to re-home it.
