Community Volunteer Week success for Council

Community Volunteer Week

A week of voluntary activities undertaken by Blaby District Council employees to help community groups in the local area has been a huge success.

Organised by the Partnerships & Community Development team, Community Volunteer Week saw 62 employees of the Council undertake 214 hours of work for organisations across the district.

10 projects across the week included helping clear up after the popular Foston Flower Show, painting at Huncote Primary School and building “Bug hotels” at Thistly Meadow Primary School in Blaby.

Smaller but equally important tasks included sprucing up the grounds of Leicester Forest East Community Library, delivering leaflets to promote Croft Good Neighbour Scheme helping clear up after the Foston Flower Show and assisting volunteers at the popular Commbus Lunch Club also featured.

Democratic Services Manager Sandeep Tiensa helped to create the bug hotels at Thistley Meadow School, she said: “I think we made a big difference towards their goals of ensuring that the site would be ready for the school children, and it was our chance to venture out into the District.

“Venturing away from your day job gives us the opportunity to learn about our own abilities, too.”

Maggie Watkins, Chair of Narborough & Littlethorpe Community Library, where staff helped set up the huge book sale as part of the library’s Summer Fayre, said: “We had very willing volunteers who worked hard & were so enthusiastic, even with the heat wave outside! We are very grateful for their invaluable help.”

Councillor Sheila Scott, Portfolio Holder for Planning & Economic Development, said: “This was a wonderful week for all involved. It gave staff the chance to get out of the office and integrate with our vital community groups and schools.

“We have heard such incredibly positive feedback from both the projects and staff taking part. We’re already looking forward to next year’s projects!”

The week culminated in a celebration garden party for staff at the Council’s Great Get Together event, joining with the thousands of events over the weekend inspired by Jo Cox.
