How can I help a Friend who is experiencing domestic Violence?
It may be difficult to tell a friend that you know or suspect there is a problem if they are unwilling or feel unable to
talk about it. If someone does confide in you here are some basic steps you can take:
Be understanding: Allow them to talk – don’t pressure them into giving details
Be supportive: Be a good listener, tell them no one deserves to be threatened or beaten.
Let them make their own decisions: They will leave the relationship when they are ready.
Ask if they have any physical injuries: Offer to go to hospital or to a GP with them.
Help them get information: Go with them to a solicitor or Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
Look after yourself: Don’t put yourself in danger.
