Conservation adviceFor Conservation Areas to be successful, owners and occupiers within a Conservation Area also need to play their part in ensuring that work carried out to their property is based on an understanding of its potential impact on the special interest of the Conservation Area and that it preserves or enhances the character or appearance of the area. The authority can advise on the need for permission, procedures, what should be submitted with an application and the matters that will be taken into account in deciding an application.

How to apply for planning permission

  1. Pre Application Advice
    • Written description of your proposal either by letter or email, please provide contact details as a site visit may be required
    • Sketch drawing(s) showing the position and size of your proposal
    • Contact the Conservation Officer to arrange a meeting, please remember to bring with you the above information
  2. Planning Application
    • Use the correct form and guidance notes provided below

Further information

In a Conservation Area, planning permission is needed for changes to buildings which would normally be permitted. Changes requiring consent include cladding a building, inserting dormer windows, or putting up a satellite dish visible from the street.
