Modernising Homes
All Councils have been set a target of raising the standard of all its properties by the year 2010 by the Government. This
target, known as the Decent Homes Standard is driving the Council’s programme of modernisation in your homes.
The Council currently has a housing stock of 2230 properties, made up of houses flats and bungalows. We are committed
to improving these properties - your homes - and bringing them up to the Decent Home Standard.
As you will be aware, the Council has recommended the transfer and management of its properties to a new, not for profit
housing association, Three Oaks Homes. The Council has taken this decision, in part because it is not able to access the
levels of funding required to deliver all of the improvements that are necessary and required by tenants.
We currently have a contract with 'Piper' for the replacement of external doors. In the last 2 years, we have replaced
the external doors to around 400 properties. This year, we will be replacing the external doors to around a further 120 properties.
Door Replacment Programme 2007/2008
* Please note: The programmes address the oldest doors first and so not all doors in the following areas will be upgraded
this year.
Area Date
Blaby April to May 2007 - 56 properties
Narborough June 2007 - 15 properties
Braunstone Town June 2007 - 17 properties
Braunstone July 2007 - 19 properties
In the near future, we expect to enter into contracts for the installation and/or upgrade of central heating systems and
electrical re-wiring.
In consultation with Blaby District Tenants' Federation (BDTF), we have been working with a company, 'Moores', to consider
the type of kitchens and bathrooms they can supply for your homes. At the Tenant Open Day in June 2006, Moores displayed
sample kitchens and bathrooms so that tenants who attended the event could comment upon their preferences. We hope to be
able to fit a small number of these kitchens in the near future.
