Land Fill

Summary

The households in Blaby District produce over 31,000 tonnes of household waste every year. Almost 78% of this goes to the landfill site near Huncote. Unfortunately the rubbish we put into landfill sites can cause pollution of the land, air and water. Our children will need to deal with both environmental and economic problems of these sites in years to come.

Some of the problems associated with landfill are:

  • Methane emission from rotting waste - a potent 'greenhouse' gas contributing to global warming
  • Potential problems of pollution to groundwater
  • Loss of valuable re-usable materials. Reprocessing glass and metals etc saves a considerable amount of energy comared to production from raw materials

Further Information

vSkips

vSkips aims to address the challenge of reducing unnecessary landfill by encouraging your support of "virtual skips". The idea is simple - Instead of hiring a real skip for your unwanted items you create a virtual skip or "vSkip" and upload your items for other people to search and claim.

vSkips is the ultimate 3 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

  • Reduce your skip size and your skip hire bill
  • Reuse. Let someone else have the benefit of your unwanted items
  • Recycle. Make the UK a greener place to live!

So before ordering a real skip, create a virtual one. Let people know what you want to dispose of. You can agree a price or just give it away FREE for collection. This means you may not need a real skip saving you money while helping to protect the environment.
