Education on Recycling
Why Recycle?
The households in Blaby District produce over 31,000 tonnes of household waste every year. Almost 78% of this goes to the
landfill site near Huncote. Unfortunately the rubbish we put into landfill sites can cause pollution of the land, air and
water. Our children will need to deal with both environmental and economic problems of these sites in years to come.
Some of the problems associated with landfill are:
- Methane emission from rotting waste - a potent 'greenhouse' gas contributing to global warming
- Potential problems of pollution to groundwater
- Loss of valuable re-usable materials. Reprocessing glass and metals etc saves a considerable amount of energy compared
to production from raw materials
All local authorities need to reduce their reliance on landfill. This means that everyone needs to REDUCE, RE-USE
and RECYCLE more of their waste. Blaby recycled around 22% in 2004 but needs to reach Government set targets of 30% by 2005.
We need YOUR help to achieve this!
The cost of landfilling waste is increasing year on year, and there is now tough environmental legislation such as the
Landfill Directive, the Waste Strategy For England and the Waste Minimisation Act, that all mean we must do more to reduce
the amount of waste we produce and find a more sustainable method of dealing with our waste.
Blaby District Council can help you recycle
There are various services and schemes provided by the Environmental Health Department of your District Council that can
help you recycle as much of your waste as possible:
