Recycling - how to reduce your waste
Summary
We
can do a great deal for the environment by recycling and composting, but the best way of dealing with waste is not to create
it in the first-place. Waste prevention is a key part of reducing our reliance on landfill and can help us to save money
too.
Further information
There are many ways to reduce or prevent the waste we produce at home.
Real Nappies – Why choose real nappies?
In households with one baby disposable nappies fill about half of the weekly bin. By choosing to use real nappies, even if you only use them some of the time, you can reduce the amount of waste that is sent to landfill and save hundreds of pounds compared to using disposables. Real nappies are easy to use an because they are made from 100% cotton fibre they are soft and gentle next to your baby’s skin. They come in many different styles and designs.
Leicestershire County Council are currently offering cash back for new real nappy users.

Save up to £50 per month
On average, UK households throw away around one third of the food they buy - that’s like buying three bags of shopping and throwing one bag away as soon as you get home. But don't worry, there are lots of useful hints and tips that can help you save up to £50 a month and reduce your food waste on the Leicestershire County Council website.
Say No to Junk Mail
Although we may be able to recycle most junk mail, preventing it is even better.
If you are fed up with junk being put through your letter box, register with the mail preference service (mps), the direct marketing association (dma) and the royal mail opt out scheme.
