Further information

Last year just under 60% of our waste was landfilled. Unfortunately, waste sent to landfill can cause pollution of the land, air and water.

Some problems associated with landfill are:

  • Methane emission from rotting waste – a potent "greenhouse" gas contributing to global warming;
  • Potential problems of pollution to groundwater;
  • Loss of valuable re-usable materials. Reprocessing glass and metals etc saves a considerable amount of energy compared to production from raw materials.

All local authorities need to reduce their reliance on landfill. This means that everyone needs to REDUCE, RE-USE and RECYCLE more of their waste. Blaby residents recycled over 42% last year but we need your help to recycle more.

The cost of landfilling waste is increasing year on year, and there is now tough environmental legislation such as the Landfill Directive, the Waste Strategy for England and the Waste Minimisation Act, that all mean we must do more to reduce the amount of waste we produce and find a more sustainable method of dealing with our waste.
