Household waste - special collections
                           for large itemsBlaby District Council operates a collection service for bulky household items from domestic properties within the District, for which we make a small charge (fees below). Collections are made daily, Monday to Friday and payment can either be made when making the booking or on the day of collection. On the day of collection we ask that items are left outside by 7.30am (special arrangements can be made in exceptional circumstances for the elderly and infirm).

Booking a collection

Collections can be arranged by either contacting the Environmental Health Services Team, by visiting one of the Council offices or by using the online form. When booking a collection we will need your name, address, contact telephone number and a list of the items you would like to have collected. We will advise you of the cost and agree a collection date with you.

Items we can not collect

  • General builder’s waste and rubble
  • Pianos and organs
  • Garage doors
  • Large gates
  • Soil or stones
  • Tyres
  • Gas bottles
  • Window frames
  • Green houses
  • Boilers
  • Large quantities of garden waste (small amounts can be collected on your normal waste collection day),
  • Items which are too large to go into the vehicle (generally anything longer than 6ft or 1.8m) and
  • Items from commercial premises

Cost

(from 1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012):

  • 1 to 2 large items or 6 small items - £16.00 (minimum charge)
  • 3 to 4 large items or 7 to 12 small items - £24.00
  • 5 to 6 large items or 13 to 18 small items - £35.00
  • 7 or more large items, please ring for a quote.

We can arrange to view the items and provide a quotation if you have any more than this.

We also collect cement bonded asbestos. The minimum charge for this is £61.85.

Payment

Cash – payment can be made in person at the Council Offices in Narborough or at the Braunstone Civic Centre.

Cheque – cheques should be made payable to Blaby District Council and crossed "a/c payee only". Please send to the Environmental Services. Please enclose a note showing your name, address and telephone number.

Debit/credit card – payment can be made in person or over the telephone.

We cannot accept electron cards over the telephone and a charge of 1.65% is made on transactions over £50.00 for credit cards.

General Information

  • Items must be manageable by two people
  • Items of furniture/appliances must not be filled with other rubbish
  • Items must be easily accessible outside and all together
  • Only items as agreed and confirmed on your list will be removed

Other ways to dispose

Mind, the mental health charity have recently opened a furniture re-use shop and would love to take any unwanted items of furniture or help with house clearances. For more help or advice please contact Sarah on 0116 278 0865.

Householders can take household waste and bulky items to the Leicestershire County Council Household Waste Site on Enderby Road, Whetstone. It is open seven days a week between 8.00am and 8.00pm, during British Summer Time and from 8.00am to 6.00pm the rest of the year.

Please note that a permit system is in operation if you want to take a van, commercial vehicle or trailer over 4ft 6ins (1.4m) into the site.
