What is Climate Change?
The climate is always changing, due to a build up of gases in the atmosphere (mainly due to burning of fossil fuels.) The build up of gases acts like a blanket and traps in heat, this leads to weather patterns changing. As a result we are seeing higher annual averages both in temperatures and rainfall. We are also experiencing more extreme weather conditions.
The Met Office have maps indicating the latest results from their climate change research.
What can we do about Climate Change?
We cannot change the effects that have already come about as a result of climate change, but we can change the future.
There are immediate steps you can take to reduce the impact of climate change:
- Install home insulation
- Buy energy efficient "A" rated appliances
- Use low energy light bulbs
- Turn off appliances rather then leaving them on standby
- Switch chargers off when not in use
- Drive and Fly less, use public transport and take holidays nearer to home
Use the act on CO2 calculator to find out your carbon footprint and to get recommendations on how to improve it.
Leicester Energy Agency
The Leicester Energy Agency offers free, impartial advice to householders on all aspects of energy efficiency. They work closely with all the local authorities in the region to help cut the amount of energy used in homes and to reduce CO2 emissions. Most local authorities provide grants and offers for residents to install energy efficiency measures in their homes; to find out what’s available in your area, call 0800 512 012, or click on the link below.
