Review and Assessment Process

Blaby District Council has completed its review and assessment for all the pollutants except for Fine Particles (PM10). Work continues, in accordance with government guidance, on this pollutant.

The Results of the Review and Assessment Process

This report predicted that the objectives for Benzene, 1,3-Butadiene, Lead, Carbon Monoxide and Sulphur Dioxide will be achieved by the date indicated below.

Table 1.1 (below) is taken from the Review and Assessment Government guidance LAQM.TG (00) May 2000, and it lays out the current Local Air Quality Management Objectives. These objectives relate to pollutant levels that should not be exceeded after certain dates.

Certain areas of the district are however predicted to exceed the objective for Nitrogen Dioxide and are referred to as Air Quality Management Areas.

These areas are listed below.

  • A5460 Narborough Road South
  • M1 corridor in Enderby and Narborough
  • M1 corridor between Thorpe Astley and Kirby Muxloe including the extended areas
  • St Johns, Enderby and Enderby Road, Whetstone
  • Branting Hill

Further information on air quality management areas.

Currently all five air quality management areas have been adopted, Blaby are currently reviewing the data collected from recent monitoring at the A47, St Johns, Enderby Road and Branting Hill. This may lead to the un-declaration of some of the areas, or alternatively may lead to more monitoring.

2The objectives for nitrogen dioxide are provisional
3Measured using the European gravimetric transfer standard or equivalent. The Government and the devolved administrations see this new objective for particles as a staging post rather than a final outcome. Work has been set in hand to assess the prospects of strengthening the new objective.
