Pollution

General Information

As well as responding to complaints from the public over issues such as noise, smoke, smells and other general nuisances, officers of the Division also ensure that Central Government initiatives on Air Quality and Contaminated Land are addressed.

The Division operates sophisticated air quality monitoring equipment which continually measures a pollutant gas called Nitrogen Dioxide mainly caused by vehicle emissions, and microscopic dust particles. Visit our air quality web page for the information it produces.

Councils also have to assess their area to discover any land which may have become contaminated by industrial activities or waste disposal in the past. Our Strategy for undertaking this work has been approved and can be viewed on the contaminated land web page.
