Further information

Fleas commonly found in homes are cat fleas, but others (bird fleas, dog fleas and occasionally human fleas) also may occur. Fleas lay their eggs in fur, hair, animal bedding and on their host (bird, animal or human). Eggs develop into legless larvae, then pupate and can turn into adults within days or they lay dormant for up to 12 months.

The cat flea is the most prevalent and readily bites humans. Flea infestations are not always a sign of poor hygiene it may be localised area of poor hygiene, i.e. pet beds could create infestation. It is important to clean and vacuum the entire area of the house where pets have access, paying particular attention to where they sleep and regularly lie, as well as edges of carpets and wall/floor junctions. Pet bedding should also be washed and where possible tumble-dried or burnt and destroyed.

It is also important that pets are treated for fleas. Ask your vets advice about treating your pets, burn infested bedding and spray or dust walls and floors, Spray and dusts can be brought at your local vets surgery.
