Further information
Bees – Many species of bees are found in the UK, some produce honey, some do not. Some live in highly organised colonies, some on their own. Some sting, some do not. Bees rarely present problems as pests, however feral swarms can set up home in undesirable places such as chimneys and wall cavities.
Masonry or Mortar Bees – Several species of wild bees will sometimes forsake their normal habitats of earth banks and soft exposed rocks to cause damage by tunnelling into soft mortar joints, particularly in old buildings. Although harmless (their stings seem unable to penetrate human skin). The use of insecticides is not encouraged as these are valuable pollinators of plants and fruit trees. As the bees activities are limited to relatively soft material, re-pointing of the affected areas is the best way of dealing with the problem.
