Further information

The black or garden ant is the most common British ant to enter houses, and are found in most parts of the country. The queen (which is rarely seen except for certain months in the summer) is a mid-brown colour and approx 15mm long. The worker which is very dark brown, nearly black, is approx 5mm long.

Ants often enter premises in search of food; they follow well defined trails to their feeding grounds. If one ant finds food, there will soon be many others. Worker ants will frequently enter premises foraging for food particularly sweet substances. Ensure that sugary foods are kept in sealed containers and all food spillages are cleared up.

Ants are not a risk to human health, but can present, if in high numbers, a considerable nuisance to householders. On hot summer days the emergence of "flying ants" may cause alarm. These may be a nuisance especially if they are inside, but they are harmless and nothing can be done to stop them swarming.

Insecticidal dusts are an effective treatment against garden ants. These can be purchased from hardware stores, DIY stores and garden centres. Flying ants can be treated with any aerosol suitable for the control of flying insects. (Please ensure you read and follow the manufacturer’s guidelines).
