Dogs - faeces accumulation

Summary

Dogs - faeces accumulationMost dog owners are responsible and will ensure that they clean up after their dogs at home. However, should dog owners fail to remove dog faeces from their property (i.e. garden) on a regular basis, it can quickly accumulate and cause a nuisance to neighbours. Accumulation of faeces can cause odour problems and attract flies. It can also be prejudicial to health. Serious accumulations may lead to action being taken under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

How can I report an accumulation of dog faeces?

  1. Contact us by e-mail, telephone or by coming into the Council
  2. Information we will need from you:
    1. your full name;
    2. your full address including your postcode;
    3. your home telephone number and a number which we can contact you on during normal office hours if this is different;
    4. your email address (if applicable);
    5. the address where the accumulation has occurred;

Further information

The Dog Warden Service will investigate any reports of accumulation of dog faeces, which is causing a nuisance to neighbours. Upon receiving the report, the Dog Warden will visit the complainant to witness the accumulation.

If the Dog Warden deems there to be a problem, they will visit the dog owner to discuss why the accumulation has occurred. A warning letter will be sent to the dog owner following a visit.

Similarly if the Dog Warden is unable to establish contact with the dog owner, a warning letter will be sent.

Hopefully this will resolve the problem, however should the owner fail to remove the faeces or allow an accumulation to recur, an abatement notice will be issued under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This notice gives the dog owner a set time scale to resolve the situation and prohibit the recurrence of the nuisance.

Should the dog owner fail to comply with the abatement notice, the Council can take legal action.
