Benefit Fraud
Blaby DC is commited to protecting public
funds and ensuring that benefits are delivered only to those who have a true entitlement to them. Our Benefits Anti Fraud
Policy is consistent with the corporate aim of “working together to reduce crime, fear of crime, and anti-social behaviour”.
Typical examples of benefit fraud are:
- People who do not promptly notify the benefits team of changes in their circumstances
- People who work but do not declare this when they claim benefit.
- People who claim as a single person but actually live with a partner.
- People who claim from an address but do not live there.
- People who do not declare the full amount of their income, savings or capital when they claim benefit.
- People who pretend to pay rent
In 2007/08 the authority undertook:
- 6 successful prosecutions
- 2 administrative penalties
- 5 official cautions
The above individuals had falsely claimed a total of £35,217.83 in Housing & Council Tax Benefit.
We are continuing this year to tackle those people who claim wrongly.
