Council Tax Charges and Banding

Council Tax is set annually by the Council and is made up of a contribution towards:

  • Leicestershire County Council
  • Leicestershire Police Authority
  • Leicestershire and Rutland Fire Service
  • Blaby District Council

Each Parish Council will also specify an amount to be paid by residents of that particular parish.

The amount paid is dependant on which valuation band the property falls into and which parish. Each property is allocated a band dependent on its value as at 1st April 1991, or what it's value would have been at that time.

Valuation Band Range of Values
A Up to and including £40,000
B £40,001 - £52,000
C £52,001 - £68,000
D £68,001 - £88,000
E £88,001 - £120,000
F £120,001 - £160,000
G £160,001 - £320,000
H Over £320,000

The valuation band for your property is shown on your bill. If you have recently moved into the property, or purchased the property and you disagree with the banding you have six months from the date of occupation or purchase to appeal to:-

How much is the charge where I live?

The Council Tax charge for your property is dependant on which parish you live in and the valuation band of your property.


How can bills be reduced?

Council Tax bills can be reduced for any of the following reasons :-

  • Discounts - for example, dwellings occupied by only one adult (over the age of 18) receive a 25% reduction
  • Disregards - For the purposes of Council Tax certain adults are not included when assessing how many people occupy a property, they are known as disregards.
  • Benefits - Occupier/s on low income may be able to claim through the benefits system.
  • Disability - Dwellings adapted for the use of a disabled person may qualify for a reduction.
