E-Government

What is E-Government?

E-Government is all about using technology to improve the way government delivers information and services to people as its customers. It aims to improve the responsiveness and quality of service provided and give customers the convenience of accessing information and services whether at home, at work or on the move, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

E-Government will help make services:-

  • more accessible
  • more convenient
  • more responsive, and
  • more cost-effective

Central government aims to modernise local government and has set a number of targets for all local authorities to achieve, to make information and services available electronically. All local authorities need to work towards completing a number of defined 'Priority Service Outcomes', these outcomes are categorised as:

  • Required - need to be completed by December 2005
  • Good - need to be completed by April 2006.

The complete list of Priority Service Outcomes and progress, can be found in IEG Statement 4 and IEG Statement 4.5 below.

Implementing Electronic Government Statements

All local authorities are required to submit an IEG statement to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister setting out the aims and aspirations for the authority together with progress over the last 12 months.
