Browsers, screen resolutions and web standards

The Blaby District Council Website has been tested on a wide range of browsers, but will work best with browsers which have reasonable support for web standards.

We have tried to design our Website to make it functional in text browsers such as Lynx, and with mobile devices such as PDAs. Dedicated support for mobile phones is in the pipeline, but the site will function with these devices at present.

The site is designed to function on graphical browsers at a minimum resolution of 800x600 pixels, but will work best at resolutions of 1024x768 or higher.

Altering text size

The default text size used on the site can be altered by using your browser's text size controls. For example:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer: Click on the View menu > point the cursor over the Text Size option > choose a text size from the menu that appears.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Click on the View menu > choose Text Size > choose either 'increase' or 'decrease'. You can also use the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl + + to increase the size, or Ctrl + - to reduce it.

Site structure

Our Website is organised into 15 sections which provide access to information on a subject basis, regardless of which Council service is responsible for delivering the related services. Information can also be accessed by browsing through the Council A to Z of Services. There are also a number of shortcut pages available to help you find a Council service with ease.

Searching

The site can be searched using our search engine available at the top of each page. The site is indexed every night, and searches will find text inside all web pages.

A to Z of Services and Sitemap

The A to Z of Services contains entries for all pages, organised in convenient alphabetical listings. The Sitemap provides a higher-level view of the site, listing all the sections of the site and their constituent areas.

Breadcrumbs

Our Website makes use of breadcrumb trails to provide you with a view of where in the site structure you are at any time. For example, for the Dogs - microchipping page:

Location: Home > Environment > Animal welfare > Dogs - microchipping

The breadcrumb trail shows that we are in the Environment section of the site, in the Animal welfare area, viewing the Dogs - microchipping page. You can navigate to any lower level at any time by clicking the links on this breadcrumb trail.
