Pollution control - air quality
Summary
Each
Council has responsibility for measuring the quality of ambient air to ensure that it meets required standards in relation
to the concentration of a defined range of pollutants, Blaby District Council monitor nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter.
If you require monitoring results from our air quality monitoring stations, please contact us on the details at the foot of this page.

Further information
Monitoring data from the Air Quality Monitoring Station
The Council uses Automated Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AQMS) to continuously sample the air in order to detect the contamination of pollutants which may be present. This equipment enables us to identify trends and the occasional peaks in the pattern of air pollution, and complements the less sophisticated air pollution monitoring which has been undertaken in the District for many years.
Blaby currently has three monitoring stations. Two of these monitor nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, the other measures nitrogen dioxide.
The AQMS are currently located at Sandhill Drive, Enderby, Sharnford and Kingsway, Braunstone Town. It is our intention to leave these monitors in these locations for the foreseeable future in order to collect some chunks of data.
Blaby District Council currently has five distinct areas of the district where air quality has been predicted to exceed the objective for Nitrogen Dioxide and is referred to as Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA).
- AQMA 1 - A5460 Narborough Road South
- AQMA 2 - M1 corridor in Enderby and Narborough
- AQMA 3 - M1 corridor between Thorpe Astley and Kirby Muxloe, including the extended areas
- AQMA 4 - St Johns, Enderby and Enderby Road, Whetstone
- AQMA 5 - Branting Hill
What will happen to areas declared as Air Quality Management Areas?
They will be subjected to more detailed pollution monitoring (called stage 4) to check the current levels of pollution and verify the accuracy of our predictions. An Action Plan will be produced which will set out steps to reduce the level of Nitrogen Dioxide in the areas. This plan is likely to include land use planning controls and transport management measures. The results from further monitoring, and the Action Plans, will also be subject to further consultation.
Air Quality Reports
The reports in the downloads section cover the following topics.
Action Plan 2004
An Air Quality Action Plan was produced to tackle the air quality problems associated with the three Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) declared by the Council in 2000.
Air Quality Annual Progress Report 2004
The Air Quality Annual Progress Report 2004 is a review of the work carried out by the Environmental Protection Team in 2004.
Stage 4 Review and Assessment
The scientific aspects of the Air Quality Action Plan have been reviewed and the Stage 4 Review and Assessment produced.
Detailed Assessment
Following the results of the Stage 4 Report, certain areas of the district have been monitored more closely. This information has been used to complete a detailed assessment which has led to alterations to the existing AQMA's and declaration of new ones.
It has not been possible to add all the appendices to this report. They can be requested in paper format.
Updating and Screening Assessment (USA)
A district wide review and assessment led to the production of the Updating and Screening Assessment document. This document seeks to identify changes which may need to be considered in the following year.
