Council is committed to protecting public funds and ensuring that benefits are delivered only to those who have a true entitlement
to them.
Typical examples of benefit fraud are:
- People who do not promptly notify the benefits team of changes in their circumstances
- People who work but do not declare this when they claim benefit
- People who claim as a single person but actually live with a partner
- People who claim from an address but do not live there
- People who do not declare the full amount of their income, savings or capital when they claim benefit
- People who pretend to pay rent
How to report benefit fraud
- Please complete the online reporting form if you suspect someone is committing fraud.
- Alternatively you can ring the Benefit Fraud Hotline on the number below (24 hour answer phone service). All calls are treated in absolute confidence.

In 2009/10 the authority undertook:
- 5 successful prosecutions
- 4 administrative penalties (30% fine)
- 6 official cautions
The above individuals had falsely claimed a total of £79,883.43 in Housing and Council Tax Benefit.
We are continuing this year to tackle those people who claim wrongly.
