Summary
This year’s winners and runners up had a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the Awards Presentation Dinner on 13th October 2011. They were called up on stage by our host for the evening Tony Wadsworth from BBC Radio Leicester to collect their prizes to a rapturous round of applause from all the other guests.

Category A - Outstanding achievement by a young person 2011

Calum’s dedication and commitment is amazing. He volunteers to help with almost everything to do with the community through involvement in multiple community groups including Thorpe Astley, Braunstone Youth Council and Blaby Police Volunteers. He attends numerous meetings per week and sometimes multiple meetings in one evening. What makes Calum’s commitment so special is that he does all this at the age of just 17!
Luke has always been interested in sport and has a passion for rugby. Despite losing three family members in a short space of time he went on to become team captain of his school rugby team. He played for the inner city schools team and has been put forward for trials for the Leicestershire School of Rugby. If he completes all his assessments with them successfully he will gain a place with the Elite Player Development Group which is the Leicester Tigers Academy.
Category B – Selfless service to a voluntary body or the community which is of a social or environmental nature 2011 finalists

Joy May - With nine brothers and sisters and mother to three adopted children, it is easy to see how Joy developed into an excellent team player. Joy is dedicated, patient and hard working. She joined ‘A Place to Grow’ community gardens following a series of strokes that forced her into early retirement. She volunteers her time at three weekly gardening sessions, bakes, makes jam and fundraises. She has also photographed the growth of the community garden to record its development.
Chris Fulton - Chris has dedicated her time to enhancing and developing the community facilities at Stoney Stanton. She has managed the Community Hall on a voluntary basis overseeing major renovation projects and organising grant applications of over £100,000. The hall is now available for use seven days a week for local community groups.
Heather Barnacle - Heather works tirelessly to support people with care and mobility needs in order that they obtain the benefits they are entitled to. She volunteers for the Citizens Advice Bureau and has made a huge impact in her role as Disability Benefits Specialist helping clients who have mobility and care needs.
Category C – Sporting Achievement 2011 finalists

Ashley has given selfless service to the people of Stoney Stanton through his involvement with the local football club and the Stoney Stanton War Memorial Playing Fields Association. During the football season he spends two evenings a week supervising training sessions, on Saturdays he helps to mark out the pitches and on Sundays he accompanies one of the teams to their match. He has worked tirelessly to encourage youngsters to join the club and helped them improve their skills through his work as a coach.
Charlotte has won four national cycling titles in the last 13 months, she has also won many international and national races. This includes three national championships in her first year of U14 racing. She started racing when she was four years old, since then she has single-mindedly strived to be the best UK rider in her age group.

A Place to Grow is a community garden situated in Enderby. It supports people with mental illnesses, physical disabilities and learning difficulties. It also provides garden plots for community groups and individuals from Enderby and surrounding areas, including young people. The overall aim is to raise people’s awareness and understanding of the contribution physical activity and a good diet, using home grown organic produce, can make to everyone’s wellbeing and good health.
4Ward Strokes - The group helps to make stroke survivors aware that there is ‘life after a stroke’ and hopefully make a difference to their long term wellbeing within the community. The group was formed three-and-a-half years ago by a small number of stroke survivors and their family members and carers. It provides an exercise tutor, guest speakers, day trips as well as help and assistance with welfare information to members.

Ian has been a volunteer for the youth offending service for nearly ten years. He chairs meetings with young offenders who are subject to a Referral Order. As part of this role he ensures the young offender takes responsibility for their behaviour, receives help to reduce the risk of re-offending and repays the community through unpaid work.
The Town Watchers are a voluntary group formed in 1995 with the ethos that ‘crime cannot flourish in a community that cares’. They encourage high standards of home security, develop and maintain good working relations with the local Council and Police, produce and distribute information on crime prevention and support victims of crime. They have organised ‘shop watch’ schemes, promoted the use of smartwater to mark property and sponsored the Ringmaster computerised messaging service.
