Taxi & Private Hire

The Council is responsible for the licensing of Hackney Carriages (Taxis) , Private Hire Operators, Private Hire Vehicles and Private Hire Drivers who work within Blaby District. The purpose of licensing is to ensure the saftey of the public by checking that the drivers are fit and proper and the vehicles that they drive are safe, suitable and reliable.

What's the difference?

Taxi - Can be hailed from the street

Private Hire - must be pre-booked.

Drivers must have a licensed vehicle to drive and must be an operator or work for an operator - see below for application details

All Drivers are required to have a criminal record check carried out at least every three years. The Licensing Section will issue a disclosure form (following receipt of a completed application form, supporting documents and the fee from the applicant) which is then sent via the Licensing Section to the Criminal Records Bureau.
