[Sep 17, 2008]

Steven David Church [52] of Western Drive, Blaby admitted 3 charges of Benefit Fraud at Leicester Magistrates Court on
12th September 2008.
Mr Church falsely claimed £3,045.29 in Housing & Council Tax Benefit, having failed to declare earnings from 2 cleaning
jobs over a period of 12 months.
The defence requested that magistrates go below sentencing guidelines in recognition of Mr Church’s cooperation with the
investigation, early guilty plea, previous good character and exceptional family health issues. He had also already begun
repaying the stolen benefit.
Magistrates gave a 2 year Conditional Discharge and ordered Mr Church to pay £100 towards the Council’s legal costs.
Councillor Ernie White, Leader of Blaby District Council said
“The Council is committed to ensuring that everyone who is entitled to benefits receives them. However, we will take action
against anyone found to have deliberately withheld information relevant to their claim. “
The public can report benefit fraud by calling The Council’s confidential hotline on 0116 272 7733 or visiting the Council’s
