Dealing with complaints
The Dog Warden Service would always recommend, where possible, that if you are having problems with noise created by a neighbours dog, you should attempt to discuss the situation with your neighbour. If you have already tried this approach and there has been no improvement, or if you feel unable to approach your neighbour directly, then the Dog Wardens will write to the owner of the dog to advise them of the complaint. To give the Dog Wardens as much information as possible a dairy sheet will be sent to you to record details of when the dog is barking, and for how long.
Should the owner of the dog contact the dog wardens requesting help and advice, the Dog Wardens will make arrangements to visit them. At the visit, the Dog Wardens will offer behaviour / training advice and can also offer rental and / or purchase of various training aids.
If the dog owner fails to take steps to reduce the noise, further formal action may be taken under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Help with your own dog
If you are concerned that your dog is barking too much or if a neighbour has made you aware that there is a problem with your dog barking, the Dog Wardens are available to visit you at home to discuss behaviour / training advice and can also offer rental and / or purchase of various training aids.
