Accessibility
Summary
Blaby District Council is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless
of technology or ability.
We are actively working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and in doing so adhere to many of the
available standards and guidelines.
Further information
Downloading documents from our website
Some of the information on our website is contained in a format that can be downloaded. This means that you don't look
at the information on our web page - instead you download a copy which you can save to your computer and read offline (when
you're not connected to the Internet). The download files on our website are in PDF format - PDF stands for Portable Document
Format.
Please note: If you need any of our information in large print, audio cassette, braille, or translated, then please let
us know when you contact us.
Opening PDF files
All you need is the Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your computer to open and save these files. Most computers these days
come with the Adobe Reader already installed, but if you haven't got the software on your computer - or you want to get the
very latest version of it - visit the Adobe website, where
you can download the software you need free.

We recognise that visually impaired users might have difficulty accessing these files, even with Adobe Reader. If you
experience any problems, visit Adobe for free tools that will convert PDFs to plain text or HTML, and for further information
about PDFs and accessibility.
Changing the size of text
You can use your browser to change the size of the text on the screen. How you do it depends on which browser you are using
- use the appropriate instructions for your browser below:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer: Click on the View menu > point the cursor over the Text
Size option > choose a text size from the menu that appears.
- Mozilla Firefox: Click on the View menu > choose Text Size >
choose either 'increase' or 'decrease'. You can also use the keyboard shortcut of Ctrl + + to increase the size, or Ctrl +
- to reduce it.
Web Accessibility Initiative
Our target is to meet or exceed the provisions of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Conformance Level "AA",
which means that all Priority 2 checkpoints are satisfied. The full checklist of Checkpoints for WCAG 1.0 can be found at
the following address:
W3C Standards
This site has been built using code compliant with W3C standards for XHTML and CSS. The site displays correctly in current
browsers and using standards compliant XHTML/CSS code means any future browsers will also display it correctly.
Exceptions
Whilst Blaby District Council comply with known accessibility and usability guidelines, it is not always possible to do
so to the letter of each checkpoint. Browsers and access technologies have outgrown many of the difficulties that once needed
guidelines to overcome them, rendering some checkpoints obsolete.
In light of this, we are continually developing solutions that ensure the website conforms to the spirit of each checkpoint,
bringing together a high standard of practical accessibility and usability throughout the website.
