Annual Canvass

Summary

Each year Blaby District Council is required to undertake an Annual Canvass of all households in the District to check that the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct.

Annual Canvass 2017

This years annual canvass will commence in August 2017 and the revised register of electors will be published on 1st December 2017.

Household Enquiry Forms (HEFs) and/or Invitations to Register (ITRs) will be sent to many households and individuals in the District. The HEF enables households to confirm details of individuals residing at the property (who are eligible for registration) and the ITRs will be sent to those individuals to confirm their identity prior to them being confirmed on the electoral register. It is a legal requirement for households and individuals to confirm details relating to the HEF and ITR.

The Register of Electors is often used to confirm an individual's address, especially if they are applying for credit such as a mortgage, personal loan or even a mobile telephone. If you are not registered you will probably be refused credit as well as losing your right to have your say via the ballot box.

What do I need to do?

 

It is particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered.

The easiest way to confirm details is to respond using the online form quoting the security numbers printed on the HEF. Anyone added to the form will also need to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

You need to be included on the register if you are:

  • 18 and over

  • British, Irish, European or qualifying Commonwealth citizen

  • 16 and 17 year olds

  • residing within Blaby District 

Please do not assume that because you were registered last year that your name will be automatically included in this year's register. Also, being on the Council Tax Register does not automatically mean that you are on the Register of Electors, the two registers contain different information.
